Hey there, cool cats and fellow flat ponies!
We’re back from summer break – and still buzzing with joy from the amazing response to the Scratch The Cat announcement trailer at The Six One Indie Showcase. Thanks for all the love, feedback, and purrs of excitement!
Even though the announcement trailer has dropped, that doesn’t mean the workload has – there’s still a ways to go before the final game is ready for a spin!
Behind the Scratch: A Quick Look Back
As our Creative Director, Felix Sherar, revealed in an interview with Six One Indie, he originally created the game as a student project while studying sound design. That’s when the idea of a musical world was born.
When Felix joined FlatPonies, he pitched the idea to our boss, Julie Heyde. She loved it and gave it the green light. In the beginning, it was just Felix and our Art Director, Christian Weatherley, working on it in between development on other games.
This August marks the two-year anniversary of the game entering full production with the entire company. As Felix puts it:
“The team itself has grown quite a bit over the last few years. We’re relatively young, but we’re part of the generation that grew up in the golden age of platformers—so it felt like a perfect fit for us.”
The game’s scale and scope have changed throughout the years, but the core goals remain the same: focusing on tight platforming and bringing 90s nostalgia to the forefront.
“A big milestone was our vertical slice demo from spring 2024. We learned a lot from that – both what worked, and what didn’t.”
What’s Next?
Right now, we’re making new levels and bosses, polishing animations, and bringing cutscenes to life.
