Behind the Screens: Meet Our Team!
Behind The Screens is our way of showing you our development process with our first Meet The Team.
Step beyond the flat screens of your phone or computer and into the FlatPonies stables! Here, the only flat thing is our logo and screens — our team is made up of real, 3D-shaped humans. But each team member has a 2D pony mascot, designed to reflect their unique personality.
Giddy up! We’re excited to introduce you to our office culture, what we’re working on, and—because we know you’re curious—why each pony mascot looks the way it does!
Programmer
Alexander Sjöström
What’s your role at FlatPonies?
I’m a programmer, primarily working on the Scratch character controller.
What makes a great work environment?
A great work environment is one where people want to help each other, where our goals align, and we all want the best for whatever we’re working on. It makes it fun and energizing to work!
What excites you most about our current project?
It’s a type of game I think most of us have played at some point of our lives. To work on something similar is exciting!
What’s been the biggest ‘aha’ moment in development so far?
There’ve been a lot of “aha” moments for sure, and it’s hard to pick just one! But I think the biggest one has to be when a coworker pointed out a mistake I made in a jumping-to-falling state transition. Upon fixing the mistake, jumping and falling felt exactly how I intended!
What’s a fun or unexpected fact about you that your teammates might not know about you?
I’m the grandchild of the last person who won the official “Sweden’s bravest person” award.
I’ll leave it at that!
If you could jump back in time, and play your favorite childhood video game, which one would it be and why? OR What’s a gaming moment from your childhood that you’ll never forget?
I’ll answer both! I would go back in time to play Halo CE or Halo 2 split-screen with my friends! It was a magical time when we’d usually hang out together in my house rather than online.
I’ll never forget the moment I played Age of Empires 2 with my dad. I had recruited a war elephant and sent it on its way to attack my dad’s base. In response, he sent out a priest that went “WOLOLO!” My magnificent elephant turned from blue to red. Upon realizing what happened, I started crying. This must have been 26 years ago, but I will never forget that betrayal!
Tell us about your pony—why is it designed this way?
I can often be found wearing colorful flannel shirts and a gray beanie on my head. If the pony didn’t come with a VR headset on its head by default, I’d still ask for one – because I love VR!
